Budapest's Underground World
There are four caves in Budapest, they are located on the Buda mountain range. Each of them is interesting in its own way. One of them is called Palvedi, it is famous for its long corridors. The second one is called Molnara Janosha, it is famous for its large halls. They are the ones that will be discussed.
Palvedi Cave
This cave is 19 kilometers long. This cave maintains a stable temperature of +12 °, inside it is comfortably equipped for viewing by tourists (there are facilities for people with disabilities).
There is a difficult place to pass along the route of the tour, a narrow staircase of 120 steps. The walls are caves interspersed with different rocks. The curved walls, polished to a shine with water, are easy to see, as there is good lighting in the cave.
A fairy tale hall was artificially created in the cave. Characters from fairy tales were formed from stalagmites and stalactites. Next to this hall there are beautiful limestone rings, which are created from dripping water from the ceiling.
This cave was accidentally discovered in 1904 by a sheep, which broke away from the herd and fell into the ground. The cave was prepared for guided tours only in 1919.
Molnar Janos Cave
The cave is located under the foundations of Budapest in the very center of the city. The temperature of this thermal water reaches up to 25 °, it contains sulfur and a large amount of minerals. Today, only three kilometers of its corridors have been explored, their depth reaches 75 meters. In order to enter this cave, it is necessary to complete training, equipment must be available and a permit is required to visit this cave.
This cave is located in Mount Gellert, it has a middle name. It was named after St. Ivan, the hermit who first used this healing water. The healing water of this cave fed the pools, and it is now called the Gellert Baths.
In the nineteenth century, a family lived next to the cave, which used the entrance to the cave as a courtyard. The artist Michal Mair depicted this on his canvases in 1877. And photographer Giorgi Klez captured their everyday life in a photograph.
It was only in 1920 that the entrance to this cave became modern, and Pauline's monks worked on it. From 1926 to 1951, the monks consecrated the cave and used it as a monastery with a chapel. At that time, the cave was a hospital for soldiers. Then the head of the monastery was executed, and the remaining monks were imprisoned. Today, it continues to operate, despite guided tours for tourists. The minimum bet amount when wagering the sports bonus starts at around $0.20, allowing flexible distribution.
